Well, last time we wrote about paleo diets, we saw there was a whole bunch of people out there who really loved it. So why not go for another round? Once again, we here at the Republic of Bacon don’t know much about the science of paleo or caveman diets. But we do know a lot about spotting awesome food. And yeah, yeah, we know – bacon isn’t always the most paleo of paleo foods – they weren’t hunting wild bacon rashers on the Serengeti a few thousand years ago. But there’s enough paleo blogs out there publishing these recipes that we thought it’d still be worthwhile to collect them. So with that in mind, let’s pick up our spear and bow and arrow and chow down on some delicious grub.
Halibut with Bacon and Leeks
The great thing about the paleo diet is that it gives you an excuse to eat a lot of meat. In particular, there is a lot of emphasis on seafood, like fish. And if there’s something that we all love at the Republic of Bacon, it’s some tasty halibut or cod that’s been cooked with bacon. Bacon’s flavouring can be very heavy, so pairing it with something nice and light can give it a great balance. This recipe from The Paleo Periodical hits all of the right notes.
When you are on a paleo diet, you can’t have pretty much any of the things that go into a regular baked good: processed sugar, flour or salt. So, if you want to enjoy a good breakfast dish, you are going to have to make your muffins out of something a little more paleo-friendly – like meat! (Mmmmmmm!) Paleo Gurl offers this delicious-looking recipe for meatloaf muffins. Pair it with some salad to make a brunch worthy of cavemen.
Broccoli, Bacon and Cashew Salad
Like our caveman ancestors, people on the paleo diet try to stick to basic meals, such as salad. Salads are easy and quick to prepare, and in many ways, they probably resemble what cavemen (and caveladies) ate back in ye old times. The problem, of course, is that salad can get dull. That’s why salads – like this one – that pack the zing of bacon with some tasty cashews can really make up for salad’s otherwise major snooze factor.
Bacon and Tomato Guacamole
Guacamole is probably one of my most favouritest foods. When you are having a big plate of greasy nachos, there’s nothing greater than having a big wad of guac slopped onto of all that cheese, salsa and sour cream. Of course, you aren’t going to be having nachos on a paleo diet, but you can still enjoy the best part of those nachos: the delicious guacamole. Bacon and Strawberries
Bacon and fruit has been dating off and on for awhile now, and we are happy to see it continuing. This recipe pairs that most tasty of meats with strawberries, making a perfect meal for a summer breakfast (if we ever get a summer!). And on top of that, it includes bok choy! Normally, that would sound like a terrible idea, but I’m thinking the mixture of flavours just might work.
