My Bacon Birthday

This year, there is absolutely no excuse: I am going to have a bacon-themed birthday party. I have always wanted to celebrate the anniversary of my birth by surrounding myself with as much delicious bacon as humanly possible. While bacon usually figured fairly prominently in the festivities – last year we prepared an epic bacon explosion on my beloved barbecue – this is the year I am officially going all out. Everything from the cake to the napkins is going to be bacon themed. Bacon gifts are highly encouraged. I am going to spend the entire day surrounded by my favourite food as well as all my favourite people, and go to bed feeling fat but completely happy.

I know my actual birthday isn’t until July, but I figure getting on this a month and a half in advance is just shrewd planning. This way, I can decide what I want well in advance and have plenty of time to get everything organized. Plus, if some wonderful person were to throw me a surprise party (Hint Hint Mr, Bacon!) then here are some excellent guidelines for them to follow.

So, the other day I made some wonderful bacon butter recipe. If you haven’t seen the recipe yet, I recommend you go and check it out now. One of the by-products of making butter, is that you get buttermilk. Not only do you get the most flavourful butter of all time, but you get the most flavorful buttermilk, too! AND it will be bacon flavoured!

You can do remarkable things with this buttermilk – like pancakes, waffles, crepes, biscuits – but what I decided to do was make a nice and creamy coleslaw! Usually, I’d cut and slice all the veggies myself, but I was lazy (bought the pre-cut stuff! Shhhh), so this became the quickest homemade coleslaw of all time.

Bacon + Beer You Can Seriously Drink It Now

As we’ve discussed before on the Republic of Bacon, beer and bacon is a natural pairing. The slightly bitter hops in the beer brings out bacon’s natural sweetness. While both have rich flavour profiles, bacon and beer both contrast and complement each other extremely well. Bacon and beer are often mixed together when creating delicious dishes – beer-battered onion rings, for instance, or a beer and bacon jam. Whether mixed together on a dish, or whether your bacon-centric meal is simply accompanied by a delicious micro-brew, bacon and beer go beautifully together.

So, of course, it was only a matter of time before some brilliant innovators decided that bacon and beer decided to get even closer together. While some of the beers have been deliberately flavoured to taste like bacon, other come by their smoky meatiness all on their own, through some kind of beer-and-bacon sorcery. No matter how the bacon flavour got in there, since everything tastes better with bacon, these are all sure to be a hit on a sunny afternoon on the patio.

Don’t be scared. I know this sounds overwhelming. It may seem overwhelming for multiple reasons. Making your own butter? Sounds ridiculous. Bacon in your butter? Sounds fantastically mind blowing that you probably can’t handle its awesomeness.

Don’t fret, young Republic of Baconites, this needs to be in everyone’s household. All you need is an electric mixer of some sort – a hand blender, a food processor or a stand mixer. Each work equally well. Heck, you could even do it by hand by shaking a jar. You’d get one hell of a workout, too! But, seriously, this NEEDS to be in your house right now. Imagine spreading butter with a hint of bacon smokiness over your morning toast, or pancakes, or waffles or at dinner with your bread or on your sandwich or in any dish that you need butter in.

And if you’ve never tasted homemade butter by itself, this will be a truly magnificent treat – homemade butter has such subtlety that you can’t get in store-bought stuff. This is true household staple and only requires two ingredients!

Bacon Love Friday: Bacon In Performance

Bacon often has a reputation for a basic and humble kind of food. While bacon is a spectacular ingredient that livens up any dish, and that many great chefs have used to make truly incredible creations, the idea that it’s a common sort of food persists. Part of this is pure affection, as we remember bacon being a regular part of our childhood meals, simple bacon and egg breakfasts often being staple morning fare as we were growing up. We often have to remind ourselves that bacon can, in fact, be quite sophisticated.

While bacon might not be he very first thing that leaps to mind when you ponder high culture, there have been many great works of art inspired by bacon. Now, while we have talked about things like painting and sculpture here in the past, it turns out that bacon has had an influence over some great pieces of performance art too. For this edition of Bacon Love Friday, here are some of the most interesting bacon performances to have ever taken place.

I wanted to do this recipe a little while ago, around the time of Mardi Gras. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my hands on the imperative Andouille sausage. Now that a fantastic grocery store opened up that literally carries EVERYTHING, I quickly snatched up a bunch of these and ran home to throw together a Jambalaya. Most people (including myself) usually think of the infamous clip from Seinfeld of Newman running down the street after obtaining his delicious portion but this is way more than just a Seinfeld joke.

I’m going to go out on a whim here and say that this is one of, if not, the best dish I’ve made thus far. Boom. I said it. That means that ALL of you must try it. It’s simply phenomenal. My roommate told me earlier that it was so good, he had a dream about it. Literally. You can’t make this stuff up.

Bacon Restaurants

One of the things that makes bacon such a lovable food (aside from its otherworldly deliciousness) is how ridiculously easy it is to prepare. One of the very first things the average young adult learns to cook, is bacon. Cooking up a full package of crispy rashers is as easy as heating up a pan and watching the strips of porky goodness sizzle until they reach the desired level of crunchiness. While great culinary minds have turned their creative impulses to bacon to make mind-blowing dishes, the simple goodness of bacon is something that even someone with basic cooking skills can make for themselves, or for guests.

Because of how easy it is to make, bacon may not be the first thing that we think to order in a restaurant. Despite my all-consuming love for bacon, sometimes I skip over the simple goodness of bacony dishes on restaurant menus, just because I am convinced I could make most dishes (probably better) in my own kitchen. However, there are some restaurants that have taken the preparation of bacon to a level of genius that even I must bow to.

Bacon Science

Did you know that bacon can be both delicious AND educational? Not only is bacon perfect for putting in your mouth, but it also gives you something to feed your brain. While my idea of a bacon science project would probably be something a lot closer to “Studying The Effects of Bacon As A Motivator” (I would be my own ideal test subject, of course), it turns out that bacon is a pretty cool and science-worthy subject all on its own.

While we definitely recommend that you exercise extreme caution while attempting any of these experiments (and make sure that any kiddos in the vicinity have all the parental supervision that they may need), some of these experiments are totally worth trying out for yourself. On the other hand, others are definitely something you’ll want to leave for the professionals. Either way, they are all pretty interesting. Now, brace yourselves, bacon lovers, it is time to do some science!

I ended up in Greek town today and I stopped for lunch at my favourite souvlaki place. Without a doubt, their souvlaki is way better than mine. One of my favourite parts is the tzatziki that they slather all over their perfectly grilled pita. Is so fresh tasting – a wonderful combination with the grilled pork (or whatever you like on your souvlaki) and chopped veggies. I just had to make a version of my own… with a little twist.

Summer is truly the season of salads. I just showed you how to make something a little different, in a quinoa salad, and now let’s hop back on the traditional bandwagon with good old fashioned creamy macaroni salad. I’m going to change it up a little bit with the addition of some more slightly exotic vegetables in zucchini and shallot, but also season it with some gorgeous fresh dill. Can’t say that this isn’t summery!
