Bacon Love Friday: Kevin Bacon

While it is true that most of our energy here at the Republic of Bacon goes to talking about the edible and delicious form on this product, we also have plenty of room in our hearts for everything called bacon. Take, for instance, the actor Kevin Bacon. We love playing Sex Degrees of Kevin Bacon on long car trips, and have been known to organize Kevin Bacon film festivals in our living rooms where we serve only the finest bacon snacks.

There are a lot of various Asian restaurants in my area, and I’ve visited almost all of them. I don’t think I’ve seen bacon on any menu. It’s kind of sad really, since there is so much potential to add bacon to so many of these dishes. You remember my bacon sushi, don’t you? With the shrimp tempura and spicy mayo, it was almost like a BLT wrapped in seaweed!

Let’s try doing some spring rolls this time. With sautéed cabbage and bean sprouts, I’m sure this will be delicious. You could even add some small shrimp if you wanted to. Damn, why didn’t I put shrimp in mine?

Also, pardon the pictures this week. I left my camera with my parents over the holidays. I’m making due with my iPhone. Not bad, huh?

Today, the bacon work is abuzz with news, that a beloved fast food chain, is introducing a bacon milkshake to it’s menu. The shake doesn’t seem to be a permanent addition, and in fact the official press release from the purveyors of pork themselves say that its stay on the menu will be “as limited as limited can be.” This threat of scarcity seems to have made it even more popular and bacon lovers all around the Unites States are flocking to their nearest restaurant to get a taste of this savoury sweet confection. So far, the response from bacon lovers has been thunderously positive, and new blogs are even springing up where people can record their first-time reaction to the glory of the bacon shake. My recommendation: Don’t go start another blog! Just comment on ours below!

We here at the Republic of Bacon have been proponents of bacon-infused beverages for some time. We’ve advocated for the use of bacon in mixed drinks and celebratory cocktails on more than one occasion. But when it comes to sweet stuff, we’re only briefly engaged with the potential deliciousness of a bacon milkshake.

Things just seem to be more fun in Latin America. I mean, look at the dance that has come from the region. There is no way things like the Cha Cha and Salsa have come from a place where people are miserable. It’s axiomatically inconsistent! This recipe is a tribute to that. I’m taking my bacon, putting on its salsa shoes and taking it to the streets with a Cuban classic – Sangüiche Cubano! This was originally made by café workers to cater to the Cuban population both in Cuba and southern Florida, or so Wikipedia tells me.

As a wise 10-yearold once put it, when asked about how he would decide who to marry, “You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.” Truer words have never been spoken. Since the big day is just around the corner, young Alan inspired me to do a second installment of Game Day recipes – a fantastic dip for his beloved chips. Alan, I hope your reading this. And I hopeyou keep this recipe so that your future wife can help you out! This is a variation of my French Onion Soup recipe, instead this time we’re mixing in some sour cream and cream cheese. A Life With Bacon

In a recent interview with ESPN.com, professional skateboarder Mark Gutterman states that “A life without bacon is no life at all.” Gutterman speaks from a transitional moment in his career, at a time when all of his previous sponsors have gone out of business and new one are in the process of signing on. To weather the storm of a life in flux, he took a job in a small cafe, surrounded by the smell of bacon every day, for the comfort of it.

This interview got me thinking about my own life with bacon. It’s no big secret that I love the stuff, as I devote my time and energy to working on The Republic of Bacon to spread the bacon love as far as I can. But it is more than that. The more I think of it, the more I realize I can chart my own personal history through my ongoing love affair with bacon.
