Bacon on the Move: Food Trucks

We like to reward innovators. Anyone who is brave enough to experiment with foodstuffs, and bring bacon to new heights in the process, is worth of attention and support in our books. We’re always on the lookout for courageous folks who harness the power of their brains and the motivation of their bellies to do something spectacular with our favourite food.

As it so happens, a culinary revolution is taking place across North America. They have been featured on the television shows Eat Street and The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network. That’s right: food trucks are gaining in popularity are are fundamentally changing the way people go out to eat. Where a food truck will stop, and what exactly they will serve, changes day to day, making mealtimes part hide-and-seek, part scavenger hunt, and all delicious. They also present some unique challenges to chefs working on the food trucks, as inviting meals need to be cooked and assembled in a very small space and presented in a way that customers can eat on the go.

It is no surprise that many food trucks choose to make bacon a key part of the meals they serve, as the flavour an aroma of bacon is something few street-wise gourmets can resist. Here are a few food trucks that are raising the bar of deliciousness and helping people get their bacon fix on the go.

This is one of those dishes that looks like it took all day to make, but really requires very little effort – Well, you do have to pound the crap out of a breast of chicken. Sure, that requires effort, but also takes out a bunch of frustration in the meantime. After making this, I was as happy as a clam! Speaking of Clam, I think this dish would go very well with a small order of New England Clam Chowder.

I strayed a little from the classic Cordon Bleu traditions. Of course, I substituted the ham or sometimes used prosciutto for bacon, as well as added a bunch of fresh herbs and brie cheese to complement the usual gruyere. It yielded quite an herbaceous delight.

Bacon Sushi

Here at the Republic of Bacon, we believe that there is nothing that cannot be improved with the addition of bacon. Whether the dish is sweet or savoury, light or indulgent, adding bacon to the mix is always the correct answer. We’re also used to some pretty unusual bacon combinations. Bacon and desserts, for example? Why, we just did a feature on bacon cupcakes! When it comes to their food of choice, true bacon aficionados think they have heard of just about every possible bacon dish imaginable.

One combination, though, that has always struck me as incredibly novel an surprising is baconsushi. This is a topic we have visited before, even providing a tempura shrimp roll with bacon recipe. There is something that
seems antithetical about sushi and bacon – one so healthy and pure, the other so bacony and indulgent. So, we thought we would explore the world of bacon sushi a little more fully, and give you an idea of how these two perfect foods are a match made is heaven.

Bacon Love Friday: Fairs, Carnivals, and Sporting Events

If your summer was anything like mine, it was filled with excursions to fairs and carnivals, sporting events and parades. Whether I was watching an entertainer, cheering on my favourite team, or browsing a market, all of these events have one thing is common: food. Delicious, indulgent food, the kind of food that can take up your whole day’s worth of calories in a few bites. And where there is fair food, there is sure to be bacon.

In this edition of Bacon Love Friday, I thought it would be fun to look back on a few of the most delectable bacon-based fair foods to grace various outdoor events this summer.

Omelettes are so underrated. First of all, and probably most importantly, they’re flippin’ delicious and so versatile. You can throw pretty much anything in them and they’ll taste good. Secondly, they’re cheap. When you’re working on a grad student’s budget, I’m sure that will make you happy. Third, they’re so quick and easy to make. A lot of people are intimidated about the thought of making a proper omelette, but this fool proof guide will melt all your fears away.

Now this is just a general guideline for ingredients that you use. All you really need is a few eggs and some salt and pepper (and bacon, of course). Add whatever your heart desires. Add whatever is about to go bad in the back of your fridge. Get creative. Omelettes are a vehicle to deliciousness.

Imagine bringing this as breakfast in bed to your significant other. You can thank Chef Rob for the extra sugar you get in the morning.

As much as I hate to admit it, fall is in full swing and winter is just ahead of us. Winter is gonna smack us in the face harder than our mothers did when they found out we ate all the bacon. Winter means more soup recipes and even more soup recipes. Well, it will hit hard for me here in Toronto, so I better prepare. If you’re lucky enough to live in a place that avoids this frigid cold, it’s still best to prepare yourself by learning some of these hearty, rich, and warming meals. I’m really on a big soup kick lately, and this thick and hearty potato leek soup is a sure remedy for winters bitterness.

Top Bacon Cupcake Recipes

Think about it: bacon cupcakes. It was not long ago that the idea of making a bacon cupcake would seem completely bizarre, a novelty that was really just for show and humour, not really meant to be eaten and enjoyed. However, like many gonzo ideas, this one has captured the imaginations (and taste-buds!) of bacon-lovers the world over. What started as a joke has evolved into a real demand for sweet, salty, bacony confections that have turned chefs into mad scientists and bakeries into laboratories. Plus, we love making super awesome bacon recipes.

We personally can’t get enough of bacon cupcakes, and so here are some of the very best ways to add a little bacony goodness to this beloved and ever-popular dessert.

Bacon Love Friday: Bacon Letters to Bacon Dresses

The days are getting shorter, but that doesn’t mean that our love of bacon is weakening at all. At every moment of the day, trained dolphins are searching the web on their water-resistant iPads in protected Caribbean lagoons. Why trained dolphins you say?

Well, the dolphins, as you probably know, have the greatest sense of awesomeness in the entire animal kingdom: evolution has shaped their snouts to perfectly pick up on the waves that awesomeness subtly emits, even across the Internet and through the water. Also, the dolphins are willing to work for fish. After a week, they’ve got a whole bumper crop of awesome baconosity to show you guys. After the jump, check out what they’ve found for you.

I’m sure everyone is intrigued about this recipe since I alluded to it at the end of my Bacon Hush Puppies article. I must say, they were a fantastic combination. I’ve always been a fan of New England Clam Chowder, but I had never made it from scratch before this. Boy, was I missing out. Also, this was the FIRST time I ever had it with BACON! (No, I’m not lying). I don’t know what I was thinking before. Geesh! Get your act together, Chef Rob!

Well, I did. And this is amazingly delicious.
