Bacon Love Friday: From Grandma Bacon Crimes to the Great Canadian Bacon Festival

We’re well into the swing of summer, and the heat just keeps pumping up, doesn’t it? The air conditioning broke down in the Republic of Bacon a few days ago, and I thought I’d have to strip down to my bathing suit. But I realized that cooking bacon in a frying pan with just a bathing suit on could lead to burny grease splatter, and I decided to just tough it out. Bacon always wins out over physical comfort. But without any further ado, here’s our favourite bacon links for the week:

A couple of years ago, I was over at a friend’s house studying for a final exam. Hours were going by and of course, we began to get hungry. His parents, of Chinese descent, offered me dinner. Of course I agreed, and we chowed down. Over dinner, we discussed the difference between Asian and Italian cuisines and one thing I learned was quite startling: traditional Asian cuisine does not use butter. My jaw dropped. Really? No butter? But butter makes everything better! (according to Paula Dean). It was my goal from then on to make an Asian inspired dish with butter.

For the hell of it, why not throw in some bacon, too. Am I right?

This side-dish couldn’t be easier. Four ingredients, one being optional. And the other three ingredients are all in the name of the dish. This simple is brainless to prepare and is absolutely delicious. Remember, more components and more complexity does not always mean more delicious.

When I was a little kid (yes, you can go ahead and picture a cute little Chef Rob in your head), I wasn’t a big fan of candy, or cookies or chocolate or anything like that. If you ever asked me what kind of junk food that I liked, immediately I would reply, “Chips!!”.Love ‘em. Loved ‘em then, still love ‘em now. I much prefer a salty snack than I do a sweet one. I guess it’s what drew me to bacon. Mind you, it also might be my genetics, such that men, on average, are more likely to prefer salt over sweet and vice versa for women. Either way, I love chips.

Now, Potato skins are like chips to the max. They’re crispy, they’re salty, they’re versatile and, best of all, they’re delicious. Below I’m going to show you a classic version, but you can modify with ANY spices you please. You really can’t go wrong with potatoes.

Hot New Bacon Trend: Ron Swanson Bacon Fanart

Are you all watching Parks and Recreation? No? Well, if you aren’t, you probably should. I think it’s probably one of the funniest shows on television. And one of my favourite characters is Ron Swanson: he’s the gruff boss who hates everything about his job and about local government. Pretty sure Ron would love the Best Burger Recipes I created a few days ago.

What he does love is the more manly pursuits in life: watching classic war movies, drinking Scotch, and most relevant to our interests – eating bacon. In fact, his love of bacon has started to turn him into a bit of a bacon celebrity. After the jump, I’ll show you some of the ways in which his Internet bacon fame is spreading.

It was the summer solstice a few days ago, so we’ve officially (finally!) entered the dog days of summer. So my question to you is: why are you looking at this computer screen? You should be out whooping it up somewhere fun and hot and full of bacon. But before you go, check out our favourite bacon links of the week. It’ll get you into the proper mood to enjoy a great summer weekend.

I’m telling ya, salad is making a comeback this summer. As long as I keep pairing them with bacon, I don’t know how they could go wrong.

This recipe is a Momma Chef Bacon special. She made this for me when I came to visit last week. It was quite a scorcher outside so she wasn’t in the mood to get the oven or stove going for more than a pot of water (or bacon, there’s always time for bacon). Everything else is cool, crisp and refreshing. Great for a side dish or a full meal! Now I forgot to add in the onion when I photographed this, but it makes a great addition to the dish.

Also, the white vinegar gives a great tang that isn’t there without it. You might be sceptical, but it’s a necessary ingredient.

Five Strange Baconized Forms of Transportation

Yah, yah, I know: we don’t normally think about bacon when we think of ways of getting around. But bacon has been attached to almost every conceivable thing, so it’s no surprise that the Internet (and let’s face it, real life, too) has conspired to turn many of our forms of transportation into bacon-related forms of transportation. Today, follow me on one of our strangest adventures yet as we explore the idea of bacon transportation. The list begins after the break.

Summer is upon us and fresh flavours are a necessity. Salads are quite refreshing when the heat is on, but unfortunately they get a bad rap, probably because a lot of people just making them wrong. Salads can be fascinating, complex and absolutely delicious. Just like this one. Actually this one is delicious because we put Maple Leaf Bacon in the potato salad recipe.

This takes my most favourite ingredient, bacon naturally, and combines it another one of my most favourite ingredients, potatoes, to give a ridiculously delicious side dish for a summer outing. Great for bringing to a picnic or a potluck or a barbecue. Here we go:

Totally Awesome Bacon Burger Recipes

With summer here, I’m dying to get out and fire up my grill. I love the taste of meat, but I love it even more when the meat has been slightly set on fire from flaming charcoal briquettes. As well, we should always remember the many positive side effects of BBQing.

The BBQ gets you out of the house and into the sunshine, and it’s pretty much the only cooking method you are encouraged to do with a beer in your hand. Most of all, grilling gives me the excuse to pair two types of meat together: bacon with whatever else I’m cooking. You aren’t normally allowed to do that. But outside, ALL OF THE RULES GO OUT THE WINDOW. So, to celebrate the start of the grilling season and the warm bliss of biting into bacony, grilled goodness, I’ve gathered together the best bacon burger and hot dog recipes. Full details after the break.

Are These the Rules of Bacon?

A few days ago I found a poster that claimed to be the rules of bacon. The rules of bacon! Why does bacon have to have any rules? Shouldn’t bacon be free to roam the streets of the world, doing whatever it wants? I would like to think so. But someone has apparently disagreed, and has compiled a list of rules for bacon. Who’s right? Today, I’ll examine the rules and try to decide if they are actually the rules to live a bacon-rich life by. The rules and all that follow after the jump.

“1. There must always be bacon in the fridge, always”

Well, if we are going to have any rules about bacon, I suppose this is one that we could all agree upon. I definitely try to keep some bacon in the fridge at all times. And I also keep some bacon bits in the cupboard. You never know when disaster will strike!

“2. There does not exist a food that does not go well with bacon”

Okay, some of these rules are making sense. I think there’s plenty of evidence on this blog that bacon pretty much goes with anything. But isn’t this sort of the opposite of a rule? Isn’t this about how bacon transcends all of our human rules about bacon?

“3. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who like bacon, and those who will be used as fodder in the case of a zombie apocalypse.”

This is just a bit cruel, isn’t it? And also what if it’s a werewolf apocalypse instead of a zombie apocalypse? VERY SHORT-SIGHTED, I SAY.

“4. Even pigs like bacon. Fact.”

I’ll take your word for that, ‘cause it’s kind of weird.

“5. Crispy and chewy are both acceptable ways to cook bacon. Thou shalt not discriminate.”

I totally agree. But once again, this is the opposite of a rule. Bacon is free! You could even eat bacon that’s both crispy and chewy. Did I just blow your mind?

“6. 90% of the world’s problems can be solved by cooking more bacon.”

Okay, cosign. Maybe this whole rules thing isn’t such a terrible idea.

“8. If your computer is antiquated and slow, you can feed it bacon through the floppy drive to make it run faster.”

We’re skipping over number seven. But I tried to do this step and then my computer began acting funny and th1!afop%$eifna23vvnal ldkfnalk adne;l

“9. Meals without bacon are rarely worth eating.”

Correct! Although I do think exceptions can be made for glasses of water.

“10. When given a breathalyser, the number they give you is your BAC.”

It goes on for a little bit after that, but it’s sorta incomprehensible? In fact, the last three rules are a bit nonsensical. We’ll just skip over them. I figure, at this point, that we’ve covered all of the main points. And hey? Why don’t we just narrow it done to two rules:

1. Bacon is awesome.

2. Bacon can do whatever it wants.

What do you think of the bacon rules? If you were going to invent some, what would you make as the rules for bacon?
