The Best Things to BBQ with Bacon Rub

J&D Foods, the makers of Bacon Salt – that alternative bacon seasoning – have recently launched a new product: Bacon Rub. Bacon Rub is supposed to be the griller’s best friend. According to the company, “Bacon Rub solves the age old problem of wanting everything to have that Wrapped in Bacon Taste.” As I am usually struggling with this very problem each and every day, I am excited that they have finally figured out a way to resolve this issue. But then again, I might have just been tempted to wrap said item in bacon to achieve that Wrapped in Bacon Taste. You know what I mean? So, in honour of J&D launching this new Bacon Rub, I was going to provide you with a list of seven things that could most use a good ol’ Bacon Rub. And I am! But just remember that you can easily substitute some actual bacon for the Bacon Rub. The list follows after the jump.

Even More Best of Paleo Diet Recipes

Well, last time we wrote about paleo diets, we saw there was a whole bunch of people out there who really loved it. So why not go for another round? Once again, we here at the Republic of Bacon don’t know much about the science of paleo or caveman diets. But we do know a lot about spotting awesome food. And yeah, yeah, we know – bacon isn’t always the most paleo of paleo foods – they weren’t hunting wild bacon rashers on the Serengeti a few thousand years ago. But there’s enough paleo blogs out there publishing these recipes that we thought it’d still be worthwhile to collect them. So with that in mind, let’s pick up our spear and bow and arrow and chow down on some delicious grub.

Let me paint you a picture about how these came to be.

It’s the first long weekend of the summer – the Victoria Day long weekend, or May 2-4 as we canucks call it. I’ve been out on a restaurant patio for a good 4 or 5 hours with a few of my best friends soaking up the sun and sipping back a couple beers – StoneHammer to be exact. Needless to say, we had a “couple” pitchers and we were quite thoroughly enjoying ourselves. The waiter actually commented a couple times that he wanted to join us.

It then crossed my mind that I was about due to write another article for this, the Republic of Bacon, and I was drawing a complete blanks (hence why this was published late). Now I’m sure that about 50 ideas flew across the table, only a few of which I remember at this point, but it was my vegetarian friend who delivered the gold. Vegetarian, I kid you not. Bacon donuts with a caramel topping. We discussed methods, but this is what I came up with.

Yeah. Vegetarian…

Hey Andrew Back Bacon! You forgot to put two salads on your “Best Bacon Salad List!” A while ago I made a spinach salad with caramelized apples, a balsamic reduction and bacon, of course. Today, I give you the ultimate wedge salad, one of the few salads for which you need a knife to eat! It’s literally a wedge of head lettuce drizzled with your favourite dressing and some fantastic toppings. I was intrigued into making a wedge salad from watching Modern Family. Those of you that are fans of the show should know what I’m talking about. Long story short, the wife gets upset because her husband won’t try a wedge salad on her recommendation. Learn from his mistake: try a wedge salad.

Traditionally, one would use a blue cheese dressing, so I’m gonna take that and run. Of course, I’m gonna add some bacon. If you want to add a little more crunch to this recipe (as if there isn’t enough), you can make some homemade croutons by toasting some cubes of white Dempsters bread that have been tossed in olive oil and your favourite herbs and spices.

Fun fact: Did you know that there is no Wikipedia article for the term “Wedge Salad”? Who knew!

I know what you’re thinking and, yes, I am aware of this fact: breakfast burritos are inherently low carb. Basically the only real source of carbohydrates in a breakfast burrito comes from the tortilla. What if I were to remove the tortilla and replace it with something with NO carbs. Something like… oh I don’t know… bacon?!?!?!?!

That’s right, amigos. We are going to use bacon as the tortilla for a breakfast burrito. People usually have bacon and other meats inside, so why not separate the godliness that is bacon from the other inferior meats and put it on the outside for all to see in awe and amazement? Awwwww yeahhhhhhh.

This is ridiculous stuff right here… Even more ridiculous then our Bacon and Eggs, Sushi, or Bacon Wrapped Scallops.

The Latest Trend in Art: Bacon Paintings

In the past, it was common for many famous artists to choose a muse that would inspire them to create magical and beautiful works of art. Although this was usually their mistress or wife, sometimes it was something different – like a favourite building or a place in the countryside. I guess some artists in the present day have continued this tradition. Except that they have chosen the wonderful and magical food item known as bacon as their inspiration. Yes, that’s right – some people have actually decided to paint bacon. Hey! I don’t make this stuff up – I just find it for you. I am going to show you the best bacon paintings the Internet has to offer.

Cindy Wright

This painting, by Belgian painter Cindy Wright, is of a huge hunk of bacon. Many paintings of bacon make bacon look really weird and crazy, so I think I’m fond of this one: it looks like a pile of bacon ready for the frying pan. Yum!

Mike Geno

If you are looking to buy some bacon paintings, you should probably consider Mike Geno. The painter has a store on Etsy, and from there, he sells prints of his meat-related paintings. He has several of bacon, including this one. They are meant to testify to the “seductiveness” of meat, and were inspired by his work as meat cutter in several grocery stores. And the prints are both high quality (he uses a high quality printer) and super cheap ($20). Sounds like a bacon and art lover’s dream come true!

Ali Spagnola

I think that of all the bacon paintings, this is my favourite. It’s the cutest bacon sandwich, that’s for sure. And it looks pretty happy! If I was going to paint bacon, I’d make it look as happy as possible – after all, that’s what I feel when I eat bacon! Even better – when Ali painted this painting, she was giving many of her paintings away for free. Let’s hope some lucky bacon fan got this painting for free.

Victoria Reynolds

This meaty painting probably looks the most photo-realistic of the bunch – I kinda want to just reach out and grab a few slices. Reynold’s shtick also seems to be emphasizing how intricately beautiful meat can look – like a very luxurious scarf for intricate needlework. She often pairs her work with super-ornate frames, like this one. As I’ve said many times: bacon isn’t just for the everyday dude – it’s can go high class as well!

Bacon Starry Night

Image Provided by bestweekever.tv

Finally, this painting isn’t actually a painting. It’s a reproduction of Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night painting, but made entirely out of bacon! It’s from the Instructable contest I told you about recently (didn’t I say that it would produce some excellent work?). So if you pop on over to the site, they’ll even give you step-by-step instructions on how to make this crazy “painting.” That sounds like a magnificent idea.

What do you guys think of the bacon paintings? Are they inspiring you to create your own paintings, or are they just inspiring to eat your own bacon?
