Porchetta Resturant Brings Carniverous Goodness to Toronto

Toronto may not have bacon trucks or bacon happy hours, but it does have something that is moving it in the right direction, bacon-wise: a new bacon-y sandwich shop named Porchetta and Co. Recently, I went down to Porchetta and Co. and tried out what they are laying down. My review of that, and a bit more info about Porchetta and Co. follows after the jump.

Vegetarians Seduced by Bacon

Are you a vegetarian? It may be a strange question to ask on a bacon blog, but I’ve heard of a new trend that appears to becoming popular: vegetarians who don’t eat any meat except bacon. The trend has recently come to our attention because of an article on NPR: why bacon is a gateway drug for vegetarians. But I’ve been seeing it around a lot lately. Are vegetarians converting to bacon-love? Why is bacon so successful at converting vegetarians? What is that special magic that makes it so appealing?

I love BLTs. When bacon is allowed to star as the ONLY meat in a sandwich, the culinary gods are happy, my friends (that’s not to say that bacon is not the star everytime it is used!). I wanted to figure out a way that I could improve upon this sandwich, impossible as this feat may sound, but I believe I did a half decent job. I decided that I would basket-weave and bake the bacon. Why, you ask?

Well, have you ever had a BLT where you took a bite and almost all of the bacon came sliding out with it? Yes, that was one glorious bite of bacony goodness, but the rest of the sandwich is now lacking that very same magical ingredient. By basket-weaving the bacon, it ensures perfectly even distribution!

Bacon Fuels Canadian Antarctic Explorers

It’s cold outside. There’s no doubt about that. Many parts of Canada have been experiencing temperatures under -20 degrees in the last few weeks. That’s cold enough to watch boiling water evaporate in mid-air. That’s why, to help you warm up this winter, I thought I’d share a heartwarming story about bacon. It’s the story of three Canadian explorers who trekked across Antarctica. They not only completed their trek, but they did it in record time. Who or what do we have to thank for this amazing achievement? It could only be that amazing and wonderful food: bacon.

Miss me? I thought so, my last recipe Bacon Lasagna was just awesome but my recipe on making chocolate chip bacon cookies seems to be a huge success. I was doing a bit of traveling and a lot of recipe experiments. The good news is I am back and super excited to show you some awesome bacon recipes. I am pretty confident I have created the ultimate line up of bacon recipes the world has ever seen.

I’ve recently been on a huge quinoa kick – a total “super-food”. It is a high protein, low fat grain that is a great source of complex carbohydrates and it contains all the essential amino acids. You can easily substitute it in with any recipe involving rice or pasta, and can even use it to make things like breads and muffins! Quinoa is so great that NASA is considering it as a crop in a future self-dependant life support system in a closed ecological environment on space station for long-duration manned spaceflights. WOAH!

I know, you get it: quinoa rock. How are we gonna make it better? Put it with bacon, obviously.

I decided to make a curry-type stuffing for the peppers because I felt the kick from the spice would contrast and balance the sweetness of the peppers quite well, where the bacon would add the saltiness to bring everything together. This was the first time I’d ever ‘curried’ anything before. I had to do quite a bit of reading to get the proportions just right. I’m quite pleased with the end result!

Use a Machine Gun to Cook Your Bacon

There’s plenty of ways to cook bacon: you can fry, microwave or bake it. In fact, do whatever you like! It’s a pretty chilled out food item. It doesn’t mind. In fact, people seem to be coming up with new ways of cooking bacon every day. This one I’ve heard of recently really takes the cake for originality: someone has found a way to cook bacon with a machine gun.
