An Autumn Dinner with Bacon

A remarkable thing happened this past weekend bacon lovers, something I have been waiting for with baited breath for many months: Football returned. That’s right friends, this past Sunday was the very first Sunday of the regular NFL season, a fact that makes me ridiculously happy. Not only do I get to watch my favourite collision sport every single weekend (and occasional weekday evening), but the return of Football also means that fall is officially here. While some people take the signal that Autumn has officially arrived from the changing colours of the leaves, the beginning of the school year, or seasonal-flavoured coffees returning to coffee shop menus all over, nothing rings in the season quite like the very first time an announcer yells “first down!”

Now that this glorious season has once again upon us, I’ve also been busily rifling through my recipe books, putting together all kinds of exciting meal ideas to celebrate this time of year. Fall has always held a special place in my heart for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that the food that is most often associated with the season is some of my absolute favourites. My goal lately has been putting together an excellent meal that is perfect for the Fall, and for a weekend day spend watching Football. Of course, such a meal absolutely has to contain a healthy helping of bacon with every course!

Bacon Love Friday: Bacon and Eggs

In a lot of ways I am an old-school bacon lover. As much as I get excited over a new bacon novelty, like a bacon brownie or a bacon cocktail, when it comes to the dishes that I return to over and over again it’s always the old classics. My favourite bacon salad is still unquestionably the classic Caesar salad; there is nothing more delicious in the realm of the bacon sandwich than a classic BLT; bacon cheeseburgers are the best thing on the planet; and there is no more perfect breakfast in all the land than the classic bacon and eggs.

When I was a tiny child, really just a toddler, the very first thing I learned to order for myself was a bacon and egg breakfast. By the time I knew only a few hundred words, I could tell a server I wanted eggs over easy, crispy bacon, brown toast and hash browns. While there are lots of great brunch dishes to choose from, and I often dally with french toast or waffles, in the end I always come back to my favourite bacon and eggs breakfast.

Record Breaking Bacon Cheeseburger

My love of cheeseburgers is well-known and documented. I am of the mind that the bacon cheeseburger may be the finest example of North American cuisine in history, and never pass up the opportunity to try a new one. When a new burger place opens up in my town, I am sure to be in line on opening day, ordering up a bacon cheeseburger with all the fixings. It’s no small wonder then that bacon cheeseburgers have featured quite prominently on the Republic of Bacon during my tenure here, something that I don’t intend to change. The cheeseburger makes for such a perfect vehicle for bacon, it’s hard to resist writing about (never mind eating).

And so, it is with great pleasure that we would like to announce that the previous record has been shattered, and, just this past weekend, the largest bacon cheeseburger ever served entered the world.

International Bacon Day

And how did you celebrate this past long-weekend, bacon lovers? Did you spend some time at the cottage, swimming in the lake or sunbathing with family and friends? Did you go camping or hiking? Or perhaps did you stay home, reading peacefully on the front porch in the morning and barbecuing in the back yard later in the day? Though it’s often a sign that summer is coming to a close (and the most ominous sign of back to school season) the long weekend at the beginning of September might be one of my favourite weekends of the year.

Of course, it’s not just the promise of cooler Autumn days and the excitement of new classes that makes this weekend extra-special, not is it just Labour Day (which takes place the first Monday of September in the United States and here in Canada). Nope, the other reason that this weekend is so special is that the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend is one of the most important North American holidays for Bacon Lovers: International Bacon Day.

Bacon and Pumpkin Coffee Wins Big

There are lots of reasons to love the fall, fellow bacon lovers: the beauty of the changing leaves, the crisp freshness that returns to the cooking air, sweater and woollen socks. It’s also a time of renewal, with that back-to-school buzz in the air and excitement almost everywhere you go. But there is one thing that makes me excited about autumn more than anything else: the return on the pumpkin spice flavoured coffee. This seasonal favourite is something I look forward to all year and miss deeply during those hot summer months when iced coffee reigns supreme and I am the only weirdo missing that nutmeg-and-cinnamon goodness. Any day now, that syrupy, caffeinated drink is going to return to coffee shop menus and I shall rejoice.

I didn’t think there was any way to improve upon this glorious beverage, but I was wrong. Some genius has actually thought to combine the pumpkin spice coffee with one of the other best things in the universe: I speak, of course, of bacon. That’s right, the bacon-flavoured pumpkin-spice coffee has now entered the world, and my head might explode out of sheer happiness.

Nothing says summer to me than a tomato salad made with tomatoes right out of the garden. There is absolutely nothing in the store that can compare to that tomato that you JUST picked, cut up and chowed down on. Nothing. You may try to prove me wrong, but you cant. This is summer glory. Unfortunately, this happens right near the end of the season – a time when back to school feeling sets in and everybody gets a little less happy. Let’s take these tomatoes and rejoice and bask in summer’s glory.

The Beauty in Bacon Beauty Products

Bacon has a fairly rough-and-tumble image, generally speaking. Being associated with things like grilling meat over a barbecue and filling brunches designed to give you energy for a busy day’s activities, bacon doesn’t often come across as a delicate thing. Part of this is the flavour of bacon instead: deep, smoky, meaty and robust, something that asserts itself strongly in every dish that it is a part of. But some of this also comes from the applications of bacon. Bacon has a reputation for being both intense and extreme, and many bacon products celebrate this, each vying to have the most bacon or most intense bacon flavour of all.

But sometimes, even bacon has to get in touch with it’s softer, gentler side. While mostly we think of bacon as a way to make everything, from food to ordinary products, more extreme, sometimes bacon like to dabble in something a bit more ladylike. So today, we at the Republic of Bacon thought we would take a look at some bacon beauty products.

A frittata is a jack-of-all-trades, a utility man, a do it all kinda guy. Anything you throw at it, the frittata will make it delicious, especially if you have leftover meat and veg. Eggs are so neutral that they can make a meal out of almost anything you have in your fridge. Green beans? Sure. Broccoli? Why not. Steak? Delicious. Bacon? Remarkable. You need to eat it, a frittata will make it happen. Today, I’m doing a bacon and zucchini version with provolone and Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses. You could do it with any combination of meat, veg and cheese, but bacon is highly recommended.
